Vision Statement
In the AUTO POLICY [2] the ministry gives its vision statement as follows:
To establish a globally competitive automotive industry in India and to double its contribution to the economy by 2010.
Automotive Mission Plan (AMP) 2006-2016
In the Draft AMP 2006-2016, the above ministry has stated the following as the vision for the future [3]:
The opportunity landscape for the Indian auto industry would encompass manufacture of vehicles and components for
* domestic sales
* manufacture for exports (both vehicles and components), and
* export of services in areas such as design, engineering, and back office operations.
It is estimated that the total turnover of the automotive industry in India would be in the order of USD 122- 159 billion in 2016 ( a substantial increase from the size of USD 34 billion in 2006).
e-learning
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers’ (SIAM) will shortly set up Asia’s first ‘online university’ in India, to cater to the education needs of the booming automobile sector fraternity.
The courses -- being started as part of the Automotive Mission Plan (AMP) 2006-2016 wherein e-learning has been identified as a major initiative for future growth -- will comprise basic training modules for freshers as well as special courses for upgradation of skills to the existing workforce.[4]

Bajaj Auto
Famous for making scooters that are reliable and last long. They started producing motorbikes.
Most of their scooters like Chetak, Super, Cub etc., seem to have gone out of production, they have now (January 2007) come up with BAJAJ KRISTAL
They also make 3 wheelers, see below.
Hero Honda
HERO HONDA, is probably the motorbike that came, saw and conquered the motor bike market, when it was introduced.
Probably they are the only company that has exclusive showrooms for woman, called Just4her.
Hero Honda Motors has achieved the unique distinction of being the World No1 two-wheeler company for six consecutive years in terms of unit sales in a calendar year. (As of 31-January-2007). [5]
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter
HONDA of Japan has setup a wholly owned subsidiary in India to make bikes for Indian market.
Kinetic Motor Co. Ltd.
It has come a long way, since introducing the moped LUNA !
They have started RENT-A-BIKE and setup offices in certain parts of India.
Monto Motors
They make mopeds and bikes.
Royal Enfield
Famous for BULLET and other tough vehicles for police and armed forces.
Suzuki Motorcycle
Suzuki Motorcycle India, is a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan.
TVS Motor
TVS Motor Company is the first two-wheeler manufacturer in the world to be honoured with the hallmark of Japanese Quality – The Deming Prize for Total Quality Management.[6]
From mopeds to motorbikes, they have progressed.
Yamaha Motor
It was incorporated in August 2001 as a 100'% subsidiary of Yamaha Motors, Japan.
LML Machines
After successfully selling LML scooters, this company ran into problems and lock out was declared in March 2006.

Scooters India
They were makers of the famous scooter "LAMBRETTA" !
Now they make 3 wheelers and even export it.
Piaggio
It is wholly subsidiary of Piaggio Italy.
They have come up with diesel 3 wheelers.

BMW
It is a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW and was setup in 2006.
Though not currently made in India, BMW owns the ROLLS ROYCE brand too.
Chevrolet
General Motors, is the parent company of CHEVROLET and was the first automobile company to open an assembly plant in India.
Fiat
Fiat now has alliance with TATA MOTORS to:
* to jointly manufacture cars.
* that TATA MOTORS will use Fiat's diesel engine technology.
* distribution and service partnership.
Ford
Ford company entered Indian market in 1995.
Hindustan Motors
Well HM is the maker of our good old AMBASSADOR car.
Honda Siel
It was set up in December 1995 as a joint venture between Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Japan and Siel Limited, a Siddharth Shriram Group company.
Hyundai
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is the second largest and the fastest growing car manufacturer in India.
Mahindra & Mahindra
The Mahindra brothers joined hands with a distinguished gentleman called Ghulam Mohammad. And, on October 2nd, 1945, Mahindra & Mohammad was set up as a franchise for assembling jeeps from Willys, USA.
Two years later, India became an independent nation and Mahindra & Mohammad changed its name to Mahindra & Mahindra. Ghulam Mohammad migrated to Pakistan post-partition and became the first Finance Minister of Pakistan. [7]

Mahindra & Renault
Mahindra & Mahindra Limited joined hands with French auto major Renault in a 51:49 joint venture in 2005 to manufacture and market Logan, the world's most affordable C-segment car, in India. The joint venture is named Mahindra Renault Private Limited.
The production of Logan will commence in the first half of 2007 in a world-class Mahindra & Mahindra facility. The capacity of the factory for Logan will be 50,000 cars per year
Maruti Udyog
Maruti Udyog Limited was setup in 1981 and in 1982 it entered into license agreement with Suzuki Motor Corporation.
It is the biggest car manufacturer in India.
It probably the only car maker in India, that has its own MARUTI DRIVING SCHOOL.
Mercedes
Mercedes Benz India Ltd was setup in 1994 and later renamed as DaimlerChrysler India Private Ltd
It has leased manufacturing facilites from [http:www.tatamotors.com TATA MOTORS] to make its cars.
Mitsubishi Motors
Mitsubishi Motors, has with agreement with Hindustan Motors
Nissan
Nissan Motors India Private Limited, entered Indian market in Feb 2005.
Skoda
The only SKODA plant outside Europe is in India!.
International Cars
It is part of SONALIKA group which also makes 3 wheelers, see above.
Tata Motors
It is one of the companies from pre-independence India.
It makes passenger, commercial and military vehicles.
Concorde Motors (India) retails Tata Motors range of passenger vehicles.
Tata Motors says that they are the only Indian automobile company participating in GENEVA MOTOR SHOW for last 10 years.

Toyota
Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited, was setup in October 1997, as a joint venture between Kirloskar Group and Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan.
Mahindra, Renault & Nissan Consoritum
[8]In February 2007, the above mentioned 3 companies agreed to form consoritum and signed agreement with Tamil Nadu state government to setup India's biggest vehicle production facility at a single location. (Its near Chennai).
Manufacturing Facilities will include:
* Engine Plant,
* Transmission Plant,
* Press shop,
* Body shop,
* Paint shop,
* Assembly line, etc.
Initially the Project will create a capacity to manufacture 4,00,000 vehicles per annum.
Apart from above, the Project would involve manufacture of 50,000 tractors per annum.
At its full capacity, this project would generate direct and indirect employment opportunity including those by its ancillaries and service providers for about 41,000 persons.
It will result in gross value addition of about Rs.18,000 crores per annum to Tamil Nadu’s GDP.
It will help to consolidate Chennai’s position as ‘Detroit’ of South Asia.
Volvo Cars
Volvo cars will be coming soon to India.
But they already make Volvo Buses & Trucks in India.
Imported brands
Some car brands that are imported and sold in India are:

It is not clear if they make cars in India, or just sell imported cars. Therefore this company is shown separately in this article.

They make buses, automotive gears etc.,

They are part of SWARAJ group enterprise.
They make buses and trucks and other vehicles.
